Meet our beautiful island Crete and explore Chania

Enjoy your vacations with a few must-visit locations at Chania!

Explore our city, Chania and take a look at the recommendations bellow for some must-visit places! Travel around Crete with us.

Chania is the location where the Minoans built the "Kydonia". From excavations that took place in various districts it is known that the area was inhabited since the Neolithic era. Since the Minoan era, the city has been an important city-state with boundaries from the sea to the foothills of the White Mountains. The first colonists from mainland Greece were the Dorians around 1100 BC. After that the city was conquered and reclaimed by Arabs (827 - 961 AD) Venetians (1252-1645AD), Ottomans (1645-1898AD). All these years offered Chania the architectural beauty that you can see just by wandering around the alleys and the old harbor with the emblematic lighthouse.

Elafonisi is an island located near the southwestern tip of the Mediterranean island of Crete, of which it administratively belongs, within the peripheral unit of Chania. When weather is good, it is possible to cross the shallow waters that divide it from mainland Crete. The island is a protected natural sanctuary. At the highest point of the island there is a plaque, which commemorates the memory of a tragic event. Specifically, on Easter Sunday, on April 24, 1824, several hundred Greeks, mainly women and children, were massacred in Elafonisi by Ottoman soldiers.

Falassarna is 59 km west of Chania and 12 km west of Kissamos. Falassarna is today one of the most famous destinations in Crete, both for beaches and for ecological interest. Falassarna has been included in the Natura 2000 plans because of the variety of flora and fauna in the area but also due to its natural beauty.

Gramvousa is the name of two small islands of Crete. The two islands (Imeri Gramvousa and Agria Gramvousa) are located in the northwestern part of the Prefecture of Chania.

The lagoon of Balos has white sand and exotic white, deep blue-green and turquoise waters. The sea is very shallow and warm, ideal destination for young children as well. In many places the sand has a lovely pink color, which comes from the crushed shell shells. Beyond the rocks the waters are deeper and cooler, ideal for a mask. Like the surrounding area, they are part of the Natura protection program, with rare species of flora and fauna. Despite the fact that it is a protected area, unfortunately in recent years, the canteen and umbrellas have appeared on the beach.

You can access tο Balos lagoon and to Gramvousa islands with daily cruises from Kastelli.

Afrata is a small village, located 3.5km north of Kolymbari and 28km west of Chania, at Cape Rodopos. The pebbly beach has nice water colors. It is primarily preferred by local residents, as it is not affected by the winds blowing in the area. The wild beauty of Rodopos Cape, combined with the scenic calmness of the sea and the picturesque village, makes Afrata an ideal choice for quiet holidays. On the beach there is a small canteen from where you can buy water and food. There are some umbrellas and tamarisk trees, offering shade.
The road from Kolimbari is asphalt, but be careful because it is narrow. After the village, follow the road that heads to the beach through a beautiful gorge.

Paleochora is built on a small peninsula, between two bays in the Libyan Sea. On both sides of the peninsula are beaches, one with pebbles to the east called Halikia beach or Votsala and one with sand in the west named Pachia Ammos that is about one kilometer long. Four kilometers east of Paleochora, is Gialiskari, there are three other beaches, near the gorge that starts in the village of Anyndri.

Scattered on these beaches, there are large rocks called Talos, from the mythical guardian of Crete. To the west there are the beaches Psilos Volakas, Plakaki and Karavopetra, Grammenos and Krios beach.

The Samaria Gorge is located in the southern part of the prefecture of Chania. It has two natural entrances, with the northern (42 km from Chania) on the Omalos Plateau and at an altitude of 1,227 meters, The gorge ends south in an extensive dry valley around the sea level, before the coastal village of Agia Roumeli. The path through is 16.7 km to the coast. It is the second largest gorge in Europe.
Sfakia is a historical area of southern Crete, which is today within the prefecture of Chania. It was one of Greece's most insubordinate areas. It is a particularly inaccessible and rugged area surrounded by the rugged slopes of the White Mountains and the numerous gorges that are formed there, while south of the Lybian Sea.

Therissos is a historic village in the municipality of Chania, which played an important role in the various revolutionary movements of Crete in the 19th century. Therissos is built on the northwest foothills of the White Mountains at an altitude of 580 meters. It is 16 km south of the city of Chania through the Therissos Gorge with a total length of 6 km.

A few kilometers outside of Chania, on a hillside of Kissamos, hidden among the mountains, there is a settlement dating back to other times. There are no electricity in Milia and there are no cars. Not because they have cannot reach there but by choice. Because those who choose to spend a few days there, wants to come close with nature, to spend their evenings under the light of stars and to hear only the birds and the waters running from nearby streams. Milia, a settlement built to the standards of ecotourism.
Lake Kournas is the only natural freshwater lake in Crete. The lake is located at the borders of the municipality of Apokoronas in the eastern part of the prefecture of Chania, near the borders with Rethymnon prefecture and 2.5 km from the sea. It is approximately 4 km from the seaside village of Georgioupolis and 2.5 km from the homonymous settlement of Kournas. The exact altitude and the dimensions of the lake vary during the year, revealing the sandy beach during the summer months. The lake has a maximum length of 1087 meters and a maximum width of 880 meters. It has a maximum area of 579 acres, while the maximum depth of the lake is 22.5 meters.

Frangokastello is a medieval castle located on the southern coast of Crete, about 12 kilometers east of Hora Sfakion, within the prefecture of Chania. It is one of the most important sights of the region and is famous for the phenomenon known as the Drosulites, which is observed in the plain around the castle, every year at the end of spring. According to Venetian records, the castle was built in the period 1371-74 by the Venetians, then the rulers of the island of Crete, for the protection of the pirates and the often rebellious Sfakians.
The beach of Stephanos or Seitan limania in Chania is one of the three bays that’s created by the sea in the area of Akrotiri. The name is of Turkish origin, from the Ottoman period on the island and means diabolical (Diabolic / dammed Ports). This characterization is due to the risk of waves in the area. Seitan Harbors in the northeastern Akrotiri area, just after the village of Hordaki, are about 20 kilometers from the center of Chania.
Stavros is a coastal village of Akrotiri Municipality of Chania. The village and beach is a tourist resort during the summer months. The beach, located within a small bay, is protected by the wind and the open sea. It is about 15 km away from the city of Chania. In 1964, on the beach of Stavros, an important part of the film Zorbas the Greek was filmed, with Anthony Quinn starring.

Lovely new car, took about 10 minutes to arrive. Took collection in Chania town and dropped it off at the airport right opposite the entrance to departures. Someone damaged the car wheel arch and put a scratch on the back while it was parked one night in the Old Town. We asked the guys at Reisen to come and look at the damage so we would know how much we would get charged, but they told us it was only small damage and there would be no cost to us! They were completely straight forward and trusting.
